Steaks high at K-State
Steak for the winners, bologna for the losers.
Dinner is at stake today in Kansas State's Purple-White Game, which is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. In the long term, however, it's an opportunity, as star quarterback Josh Freeman said Thursday, to see how the newcomers adjust and find out what can be expected.
Nevertheless, it's an event, the first time these Wildcats will be unveiled to the public and competing under the bright lights at Snyder Family Stadium.
Ron Prince can't wait.
"I know we've had a productive spring," he said.
As per tradition, the K-State coach will provide first-half analysis on the radio. At Virginia, Al Groh handed over the reins of the spring game to his coordinators, allowing his assistants the opportunity to run the show.
Prince has done the same in Manhattan.
Offensive coordinator Dave Brock, who will coach the White, won the coin toss this week and used the first pick of the draft on defensive end/linebacker Ian Campbell, a two-time All-Big 12 selection.
The first choice for defensive coordinator and Purple coach Tim Tibesar?
Cornerback Josh Moore, who sat out every game in 2007.
Was that a surprise, especially with quarterback Josh Freeman available?
"No, it didn't surprise me at all," Prince said.
There will be a running clock. Quarterbacks are off limits. Most of all, though, Prince is expecting a clean game, which means minimal miscues.
Good luck figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of both teams. Prince said they looked even, but he added that one team appeared to have significantly more experience than the other.
"No trades were offered, and I thought that was interesting," he said.
